Showcasing Robotics and 3D Printing to High School Students

February 28, 2014

March is National Engineering Month and to celebrate, the Sheridan Engineering Association is organizing an engaging two-day event to introduce young people to robotics and 3D printing.

On March 3 and 4, the “Sheridan, Get Innovative” event will host students from Castlebrook High School, together with parents, teachers and members of the Ontario Section of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) on campus.

Professor Andy Alubaidy will conduct a robotics demonstration in which Lego NXT Robots will be programmed to traverse a wooden maze.  Dr. Godfrey Onwubolu will conduct a lecture on 3D printing and students will also have the opportunity to design their own creations using 3D printers.

Sheridan engineering students will also showcase their capstone projects.  Items on display include a paper cutter, packaging system, and an automated colour sorting system.

The event responds to a call from the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT) that challenges engineering students in colleges across the province to host an event to showcase their field.  Sheridan College was the first team to enter.  The winning organizers will be awarded a $2500 cash prize and memberships in OACETT. The event is being generously sponsored by OACETT, HalTech and the School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at Sheridan.
