The Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State for Science and Technology, and Amrit Mangat, MPP for Mississauga-Brampton South, joined Mayor Hazel McCallion and Dr. Jeff Zabudsky, President and CEO of Sheridan College, for the official opening last night of the Sheridan College Hazel McCallion Campus.
The project received a Government of Canada investment of $15.6 million through the Knowledge Infrastructure Program (KIP) and a contribution of $15.6 million from the Ontario government through the 2009 Budget. The City of Mississauga partnered with Sheridan College to provide the campus site at 4180 Duke of York Boulevard.

“We are very grateful for the combined funding from the federal and provincial governments under the Knowledge Infrastructure Program, along with the support from the City of Mississauga, which have helped to make the Hazel McCallion Campus a reality,” said President Jeff Zabudsky. “We are proud to celebrate the opening of this state-of-the-art facility, and to provide exceptional business programs as well as specialized programming for newcomers, right here in the heart of the city centre.”

Mayor McCallion proudly cut the ribbon to mark the official opening of her namesake campus, which she described as “a new jewel in the crown of Mississauga.” The event was attended by hundreds of Sheridan donors and supporters, many of whom contributed directly to help fund the new facility.  She was joined on stage by Dr. Zabudsky, Minister Goodyear and Mrs. Mangat, as well as Sheridan Student Union President Monique Pereira, The Honourable William G. Davis, and Rob Filkin, Chair of Sheridan's Board of Governors.

“Our government’s investment in post-secondary infrastructure has given Sheridan College’s students and researchers the facilities they need to be global leaders in their fields,” said Minister of State Goodyear. “This project will allow Sheridan College to strengthen its capacity and build on its reputation as a leading institution of higher learning.”

“Investing in students from Ontario as well as abroad is part of the Ontario government’s goal to put students first,” said MPP Mangat. “The Sheridan College Hazel McCallion campus has not only created 146 new jobs but will accommodate 1,760 new students to the campus, including newcomers enrolled in a range of language training and employment preparation programs. These investments are an example of how Ontario is helping to support students from here and abroad. ”

The Hazel McCallion Campus is a 4-storey, 155,000 sq. ft. facility featuring 33 state-of-the-art learning spaces, including a collaboratory, lecture hall, and mobile/flexible classrooms.  The campus opened on September 6 with over 1,000 students enrolled in postsecondary and postgraduate business programs, with a further 350 students scheduled to start classes in January.  The provincial government has committed $60 million in funding to construct Phase Two of the campus, which will accommodate an additional 3,500 students.  Construction is projected to begin in the fall of 2012.
