Presentation of cheque from guard.me

guard.me International Insurance makes generous donation to Sheridan in support of international students

November 27, 2014

At a special event held today at Sheridan’s Davis Campus, Keith and Sharon Segal, Founders of guard.me International Insurance, presented Sheridan’s President and CEO, Dr. Jeff Zabudsky, with a cheque in the amount of $500,000. A plaque unveiling also took place, designating the college’s tutoring centres at each of its campuses in Brampton, Mississauga and Oakville, as the guard.me Tutoring Centres. The company’s gift will support expanded programming in the Tutoring Centres, and also help to fund scholarships and bursaries for international students.

Sheridan’s Tutoring Centres provide services and programs to all students, and many international students can attest to the impact the Centre has had on their own success.  Fernanda Guimaraes, a 2nd-year Marketing student from Brazil, said that she had always had difficulty with writing before  taking advantage of the Centre’s services. “I used them for every class, and it made a huge difference,” she said, noting that she has achieved a 4.0 GPA thanks to the Centre’s support.

“We are extremely pleased to be able to support Sheridan College with this donation to establish the guard.me Tutoring Centres,” said Keith Segal. “guard.me has had a long relationship with Sheridan College, and with President Zabudsky at the helm, Sheridan College, with its world renowned programs, has become a proven leader in international education.”

“guard.me understands the needs of international students, and goes above and beyond to provide worry-free services and advice, which eases the transition of international students to Sheridan,” said Dr. Zabudsky. “This award-winning organization is unparalleled in the services they provide, and they have become unique partners in the internationalization of Sheridan.”

Sheridan’s commitment to internationalization is reflected in its growing population of international students, who now make up close to 20% of the college’s 20,000-strong student body. “International students bring a world of perspectives to the classroom, enriching the learning experience of all our students,” said Ian Marley, Vice President of Student Affairs and Enrolment Management. “The diversity of ideas, opinions and discussions that result help to ensure that all of our students leave Sheridan as globally-minded citizens who are ready to thrive in our interconnected world.”
