McGuinty Government Helps People in Oakville Train for Good Careers

For Immediate Release: February 5, 2010
Oakville, Ontario

MPP Kevin Flynn announced today that the Ontario government is funding pre-apprenticeship training in Oakville in the Industrial Mechanic Millwright program in partnership with Sheridan College.

“Sheridan College is a leader in skilled trades training for Ontario,” said Flynn. “I’m pleased that the Ontario government and Sheridan College are working together to help people develop the skills to succeed as an apprentice.”

The Ontario government’s investment of $249,625 will support 25 participants at Sheridan develop the skills they need to qualify for and succeed in apprenticeship training.

“Sheridan currently prepares over 500 apprentices and 275 pre-trade/pre-apprentices each year for rewarding careers in the skilled trades,” said Sheridan’s President, Jeff Zabudsky. “This additional funding from the government will help us continue to expand our programming to meet the growing demand for skilled trade workers.”

Pre-apprenticeship training bridges the gap between the skills employers require and the learning or experience people who want to work as apprentices possess.

“Our government is strengthening Ontario’s apprenticeship and skilled trades system so that we will have the skilled workers we need to succeed in tomorrow’s economy,” said Flynn.
