Celebrating Business Excellence

June 13, 2013

Ces Nucci's recipe for success

For Immediate Release: June 13, 2013
Mississauga, ON

On Monday, June 17 Sheridan College will celebrate the best of business achievement, innovation and entrepreneurship at the Mississauga Convention Centre as it recognizes this year’s inductee into its Business Alumni Hall of Fame and hands out over $55,000 in student awards.

Baking His Way to Fame

This year’s inductee is Cesidio (Ces) Nucci, who graduated from the Business Administration program in 1975. After being downsized in 1985 from his position as a national sales manager in the food industry, Nucci turned adversity into opportunity and launched NuStef Foods Ltd., to commercialize production of the traditional Italian pizzelle cookie.

Nucci’s company is now the largest pizzelle manufacturer in the world, producing 1.5 million cookies per day in his Mississauga-based facility.  The cookies, sold under the Reko brand name, can be found in major grocery retailers across Canada and are shipped to the United States, Taiwan, New Zealand, Australia, Mexico and even Italy, making NuStef somewhat of a rarity given that it ships its product to its country of heritage.

The Secret to Success

“I knew this product would evoke memories for Italian-Canadians but that it would also be unique and delicious enough to gain new converts,” explains Nucci.  “There were no large-scale manufacturers on the market at the time and home-made products like this one were at risk of disappearing as young people lacked the time to master the technique from older generations.”

Nucci’s first machine was a self-built model since nothing suitable existed on the market. He ran the machine for five hours a day – enough time to make 12 cases of cookies that he personally sold each night.  Today, his 54,000 square foot, automated production facility supports seven production lines, enables 8-10% growth each year, and employs a dedicated team of 74.

Loyalty and Integrity

Nucci was nominated for Sheridan’s pinnacle award for business achievement by retired faculty member David Tinker who taught marketing from 1968-98 and recognized something special in his former student.  “He truly cares for his people,” says Tinker. “The first two people he ever hired are still with him today and he knows everyone on staff by name.”

The Next Generation of Business Leaders

“Our event on June 17 is about recognizing the best that we have to offer,” says Bill Holmes, Dean of Sheridan’s Faculty of Business.  “In addition to celebrating Ces’ success, we’re giving out 93 student awards recognizing everything from academic achievement to leadership qualities, community involvement, and core business skills such as communication, cooperation and innovative thinking.”

For his part, Nucci joins an illustrious group of previous Hall of Fame inductees including Ian Oliver, President Metroland Media Group, Ron White, CEO and Creative Director of the luxury shoe company that bears his name, Scott Stratten, President of Un-Marketing and a leading influencer in social media and engagement, and Lorraine Hughes, who retired in 2011 as President of OMD Canada – the country’s largest media buying company.
