Sheridan Recognizes International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Location Trafalgar - B & C Wings, 1430 Trafalgar Road

Tuesday, December 3 is the annual observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

Proclaimed in 1992 by the United Nations General Assembly, this day aims to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all areas of society and development, and to increase awareness of the political, social, economic and cultural challenges they often face.

Sheridan’s recognition will include numerous events, resources, and initiatives throughout next week to help our community learn more about resources for persons living with disabilities, and how we might support our peers.

December 2 -6:  Educational Activities with our Peer Mentors

Sheridan’s Accessible Learning Peer Mentors will offer daily activities and information sessions in the Trafalgar C-Wing Pit (by the B/C-Wing bridge) throughout next week. Events will run from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. starting Monday, December 2 through to Friday, December 6.



December 5: Magnus Card Transit App Information Session

Join us on Thursday December 5 from 12 p.m. – 1 p.m. at Trafalgar B124 for a special presentation about the Magnus Card Transit App.

Representatives from Oakville Transit and Milton Transit will share information about the app, a downloadable ‘card deck’ that can assist persons with autism or other cognitive special needs with:

  • Paying transit fares
  • Using the Presto system;
  • Riding the bus;
  • Planning a trip, transferring and;
  • Getting help and staying safe

The representatives will also share information about accessibility on the Oakville and Milton transit bus systems, and answer questions. All interested students, staff and faculty are welcome to attend.

This event is being organized by the Sheridan Student Union Face It Club and Student Affairs (Accessible Learning, and Wellness and Counselling), with support from the Centre for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.

December 5: Join the SSU’s Face It Club’s 10-year Anniversary Celebrations

The Sheridan Student Union’s Face It Club at Trafalgar is celebrating its 10th anniversary!

Face It Club (Friends Accepting Challenging and Endeavouring to Improve Themselves) is a Sheridan Student Union Club, co-facilitated by Accessible Learning and Wellness and Counselling Services for students and Sheridan Alumni living with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Meeting weekly, members come to make friends while strengthening self advocacy, social, and leadership skills.

The Sheridan community is invited to learn more about the club’s milestones and accomplishments throughout the years at a special celebration taking place Thursday, December 5 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Trafalgar C-Wing Pit (by the B/C-Wing bridge).

Join us for fun and interactive games, prizes, and learn more about autism!
