About Tutoring

Tutoring at Sheridan

Tutoring Services at Sheridan offers three kinds of tutoring:
1) Learning Assistants (LA) in the Tutoring Centres
2) Peer-Assisted Learning (PAL) leaders in classrooms
3) Peer Tutors at a location determined by you and your peer 

Get help with Computer Programming, Math, Chemistry, English/Writing, Accounting, Finance, and Statistics at no additional cost to you as a Sheridan student from Learning Assistants in the Tutoring Centres.

- Learn how to proofread your work

Learning Assistants (LA)

Tutoring is offered at no extra charge for Sheridan students. Sessions are offered in ½ hour and 1 hour appointments or shorter drop-in sessions. The Tutoring Centre hires Sheridan co-op students, University of Waterloo, Ryerson, and University of Guelph senior co-op students.

Tutoring provides support in Math, Business Math (Accounting, Finance, Statistics),Chemistry, English (writing and communication), and Object-Oriented Programming (primarily Java).

Math Tutors & Business Math Learning Assistants

Our Math tutors can help you with general Math, most Business Math topics (e.g., Accounting, Finance, Statistics, etc.), as well as many technical Math and related topics. Talk to the tutor about your needs. The tutor will not do your work for you but is there to provide explanations of concepts and patiently help you problem solve your way to finding solutions and understanding your subject better.

Chemistry Learning Assistants

Chemistry tutoring is available for fundamental issues related to Chemistry, Organic and Biochemistry from a health perspective, including disciplines such as Pharmacy, Nursing, Nutrition and Medicine.

Java Learning Assistants 

Our Java tutors can help you with object-oriented programming (Java 1 and Java 2) and other computer programming-related questions.

English Learning Assistants

English tutors can help you understand how to succeed in writing and research at the post-secondary level.

  • Plan assignments and practice writing skills
  • Improve grammar and mechanics *NOTE: tutors cannot proofread entire assignments, but can review a portion of it for structure and grammar and offer constructive feedback on content and style.*
  • Develop presentation skills
  • Learn basic computing
  • Discuss study and test-taking strategies

For ESOL/ESL and LINC students:

  • One-on-one speaking and pronunciation practice
  • ESL Conversation Circles (see Group Tutoring)
  • Reading and listening comprehension
  • Writing Practice

Citation & Reference Specialists

Citation and Reference Specialists help you better understand how to build and correct your citations and references for your writing assignments, and help to learn bibliographic documentation (citation and referencing in APA, MLA and other styles). Bring your references and sources for one-on-one help!


 

Peer-Assisted Learning (PAL)

The PAL (Peer-Assisted Learning) program is a modified supplemental instruction support program for first year, historically difficult, or mandatory "gatekeeper" courses at Sheridan. Students who excel in the course are employed as PAL Leaders to help you to review notes, discuss readings, develop study skills and prepare for your tests and assignments. PAL Leaders work closely with your professor to support you and your class.

Peer Tutoring
