Working at the Library

The library hires current, full-time students on a part-time basis to assist library staff in providing excellent services for the Sheridan community. Student positions play an important role in fulfilling the library’s vision of committing to new approaches in the design, delivery and integration of services that support rapidly changing academic and information environments.

When does hiring take place?

Hiring takes place by August for the Fall term, December for the Winter term, and April for the Spring and Summer term. Applications should be submitted by mid-term for consideration for the following term.

Student Positions

Library Page

Under the direction of the Supervisor, the Library Page is responsible for staffing the Service desk, maintaining the collection, tidying the library and providing basic printer assistance during assigned shifts.

Duties:

  • Staffing the circulation desk: checking library material in and out, renewing items, placing holds, paying fines, looking up specific titles and providing basic directional information for members of the Sheridan Community.
  • Maintaining the collection: shelving library material and shelf reading
  • Lifting, carrying and shelving books using a book truck
  • Other duties: tidying the library, filling printers/photocopiers with paper and, at the discretion of the Supervisor, the library page may be assigned other duties as needed

Qualifications:

  • Must be a full-time Sheridan student that possesses strong organizational and interpersonal/customer service skills
  • Fluent in computer technology
  • Team-oriented but comfortable working independently as well
  • Training will be provided

Library Pages are assigned 1–3 shifts per week for a maximum of 10 hours a week. Must be available to work evenings and weekends as well as daytime hours.

Peer Mentor

Library Peer Mentors assist students in the use of the Library and its resources. They may conduct information/orientation sessions, create displays, and assist in the organization of special events.

Duties:

  • Assisting students with questions about using the library
  • Providing basic computer support
  • Promoting Library Services and Resources
  • Conducting Library orientation tours for students and faculty on a scheduled or drop-in basis
  • Performing other related duties as required

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary, full-time Sheridan student with minimum 'B' average
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; responsible, well organized and dependable
  • Proficiency with basic computer hardware and software
