Coronavirus Updates for Employers

Sheridan would like to thank you for all your support of our Co-op programs and to share with you some updates regarding our Spring/Summer Co-op work term.  As we are all navigating through the Covid-19 pandemic, Sheridan Co-op is continuing to work with employers and students to provide valuable experiential learning experiences.   We understand there are widespread hiring challenges at this time and have made some modifications to our usual Co-op policies.

Spring/Summer Work Term

The health and well-being of our students remain a priority, and we can approve and highly encourage remote work for the Spring/Summer work term wherever possible.  Understanding this may present challenges for on-boarding and training purposes, we have put together the following guidelines for your review.  https://sheridancollege.libguides.com/EmployersGuideWIL

If you are an employer who has been deemed an essential service and require your student(s) to be onsite, either full-time or on a partial basis, please connect directly with your Co-op Advisor to discuss.  For the protection of both our students and employer partners, we are committed to ensuring that the proper safety and physical distancing protocols are being adhered to.  Further approvals from Sheridan leadership is required for onsite work. 

Typically co-op hiring is for 4 or 8 month periods with minimum hour requirements for credit.  We have introduced some flexibility to these requirements and are happy to work with you to consider any shorter work term opportunity and how it may work for Co-op purposes.    Students are available from May to September 4th, with part time hours and delayed start dates being accommodated where feasible.   A student starting as late as early July, may still accumulate enough hours under our revised Spring/Summer term policy.   A minimum of 10 weeks is still required for a Co-op work term to be eligible for the Ontario Cooperative Education Tax Credit and we will follow up should there be any updates on this.

Wage subsidies and other funding supports may also be available to you and more information can be found through the Student Work Placement program.  If both employer and student are eligible, you could qualify for 50% of wages up to $5000 per student, or 70% of wages up to $7000 per student if from an under-represented group.  Please follow up with your Co-op Advisor if you have any questions regarding these programs and which may be most applicable to your organization.

Finally, we are building curricular alternatives to traditional Co-op and Internship work-terms including the ability to work remotely with an industry “mentor” or to work on social innovation challenges to help our local community overcome new challenges that have arisen as a result of COVID-19. As a result, in addition to job postings, we are eager to engage with industry mentors and to solicit from our partners challenges or problems that COVID-19 has created that our students could propose solutions for (ie. Interior Design students developing social distancing accommodations or Interaction Design students building websites or apps to facilitate collaborative online work.
