Purposeful Programs

Brian Kall

Brian Kall
Faculty of Animation, Arts and Design
Student, York University/Sheridan College Program in Design

Brian’s road to success hasn’t exactly been straightforward. Before enrolling in the York University/Sheridan College Program in Design, he was a Civil Engineering graduate out of the University of Ottawa, and working a full-time job in his field. While he was more than capable of doing the work, he remained unsatisfied, and had an implacable itch to pursue something completely different.

“The last four years have basically been an identity crisis for me,” says Brian. “Civil engineering is very analytical and challenging, but it just wasn’t my life’s passion."

After taking time off to do some soul searching (and backpacking through Europe), Brian discovered that he had a passion for design. “I spent that summer researching different programs and options, and ended up taking a design foundation program at Algonquin College, which is where I discovered my love for graphic design. I just loved the kinds of projects we were doing there, so coming to an amazing design school like Sheridan was the natural next step.”

Sheridan has opened up many different doors for Brian, not only giving him the skills necessary to gain professional success, but also through the Design Student Association, where he has forged meaningful connections and friendships. “Because of the visibility associated with being a part of the DSA, a lot of people would reach out to me with questions, and I ended up meeting a lot of people this way.”

Brian says his perspectives in the world have changed drastically during his time at Sheridan. “I certainly have more skills in art tech and production than I did before.” His involvement with the DSA also allowed him the chance to make unique connections. To boot, he has already completed a co-op placement, and has even been considering summer design positions in Japan.
