Winning fans on the web

Supinder Wraich found her way to Sheridan while volunteering on a film set. Although she had earned a degree in communications from the University of Ottawa she still wasn’t sure of her career path. A cinematographer suggested she look into Sheridan’s Advanced Television and Film post-graduate program. Supinder had been acting occasionally but said her time at Sheridan “legitimized acting as a career in my mind. As a novice in the field I got a lot of insight because the teachers were all industry experts. The program offered a real eye opener to the opportunities available,” said Supinder who studied at the Canadian Film Centre following her Sheridan graduation.

Over the past several years the Indian-born actress has built an impressive resume and was most recently named the Star of the 2015 Mosaic International South Asian Film Festival in Mississauga. She has appeared in several films and TV series including CBC series The Border, BBC America’s Copper, Global’s Rookie Blue and NBC’s Saving Hope. But Supinder’s biggest break came with the lead role she landed in the Emmy Award-winning CTV web series Guidestones. Her performance as Sandy Rai earned Supinder a Canadian Screen Award in the digital series category in 2015 and an International Academy of Web Television nomination for 'Best Female Performance (Drama) in 2013.

Being part of the conspiracy theory-based series was an exciting experience, Supinder said. “In the two seasons we shot on location where the conspiracies originated – India, Paris, Greece and various places in the U.S.”

Supinder welcomes the chance to pursue other opportunities in the future both in front and behind the camera including screenwriting which she studied at Sheridan. “Film and television is a challenging industry, said Supinder. “Recent graduates need to be headstrong and open to learning new skills.”
