How to Succeed in Advertising

Sarah Thornley started working in the advertising industry immediately following graduation and has never looked back. Now Marketing Manager at Harry Rosen, she began building her career as a Sheridan student.

She was part of two gold medal-winning teams at the Ontario Colleges Marketing Competition and a founding member of the Sheridan Advertising Association. In her final year, Sarah was a silver medalist for the highest GPA in her class, and the Valedictorian for the Faculty of Business at Convocation.

A compelling speaker, Sarah studied theatre at Brock University in her hometown of St. Catharines before attending Sheridan. “During this time I got a sales job at Future Shop and my business side came out. I then thought: ‘what career will allow me to combine creativity and business?’ The answer: advertising.”

She continued to work at Future Shop while attending college, having found the retail environment to be an ideal training ground for the advertising industry. “You learn great people skills, how to problem-solve and think on your feet. At the end of the day, it’s all about customer service,” says Sarah.

Success in advertising is also about commitment and drive, as Sarah clearly demonstrates, having made the move from Account Supervisor, DDB Canada to Retail Advertising Supervisor, Kia Canada to Account Supervisor, TAXI to her current role in seven short years since graduating.

“My advice to new graduates: demonstrate that you have initiative, drive and passion,” she says. “Show that you care about the job. Seize opportunities and remember that no one is going to hand you a career on a platter.”

Sarah continues to give back to the college as an alumni speaker and mentor.
