A New Start

A licensed paralegal, Kerry Bushey is a Law Clerk at Laxton Glass LLP in Toronto in the area of insurance defence.

What brought you to Sheridan?

I spent 10 years in corporate accounting prior to attending Sheridan. (I had earned an accounting diploma from Georgian College).  My career change came after I escaped an abusive marriage in 2008. Becoming a Paralegal was the best way for me to gain a professional designation and start a new life.  Improvements to the Sheridan campus provided a relaxing environment geared to learning.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

It is hard to pick a single element: the mental challenge; the lifestyle that I am providing for myself; being a part of litigation that has a view to stopping fraud.

Is there a demand for paralegals in Canada?

Yes, but the traditional law community appears resistant to extending due respect to Licenced Paralegals.  My title is that of Law Clerk.   However, today’s tighter standards will improve the quality of entrants into the field, and that will bolster credibility and acceptance.

What advice would you offer a new graduate?

Utilize social networking and be nice to people.  The toes you step on today may be connected to the hand that you have to shake tomorrow. Consider volunteering time within a practice area that you would like to break into as that may be the facilitator, and it is free education.

What do you do for fun?

I have been a belly dancing student, on and off, since 1997. In 2013, I earned a spot on an Egyptian Folklore performance Troupe. I have also had success at competitive amateur billiards, and was on a team that competed in Las Vegas in a 9-ball tournament in 2009.  We finished 17th out of 381 international teams. My interest in pool began on a date with a handsome guy in high school.  He was kind enough to show me how to hold the cue, and I was hooked ever since.
