The Sky’s the Limit

In March 2011, I achieved a longtime dream of becoming a commercial pilot when I graduated from the Brampton Flight College. While I look toward building my professional flying career, I am working as a crew scheduler at Sunwing Airlines.

Born in Trinidad, I moved to Canada at the young age of two, growing up mainly in Brampton where I now live. I started off my career in the travel industry with Jetsgo Airlines in 2004, as a passenger service agent at Pearson Airport. A year later, I moved to Itravel2000 as a sales associate. I stayed with the company for three years, retailing travel-related products to the general public, such as flights, packages, hotels and car rentals. While working with Itravel2000, I met some graduates of Sheridan’s Tourism and Travel program which they highly recommended. With no other formal training, I decided it was time to become certified in the business.

The training that I received at Sheridan has proven invaluable. The excellent teaching skills of faculty members Colleen Mulligan, Victoria Renton and Donna Black helped me become a better and more knowledgeable individual today. Their passion for travel took this program to another level, showing us just what it takes to succeed in this competitive business. The travel industry, especially the airline business, is changing on a daily basis and we must be prepared to tackle this change head on. Sheridan helped me grasp this concept and learn to be flexible.

While attending Sheridan, I continued to work at Itravel2000 part-time. Juggling both school and work was not easy but it paid off in the end. In June 2008, I graduated with high honors, exceeding my own expectations.

The same year, I began training at the Brampton Flight College, obtaining my private pilot license in 2009. I also continued working toward receiving my commercial license and multi engine IFR rating, which I now have as well. My ultimate goal is to become an airline captain on an Airbus A330 aircraft. Then, I will look back at all my experiences, including those at Sheridan, with gratitude for their role in my success.

Keep pushing yourself to excel. Anything is possible once you have the motivation and drive to succeed. The relatively few years you spend in college or university will pay off. Always remember, the sky’s the limit!
