Career With a Cause

At Sheridan, for the first time in my academic life, I was surrounded by people who thought and felt the same way that I did. I learned that with the right group of people, you can channel positive energy into achieving great things.

My volunteer experience with Civitan International in high school provided me with an opportunity to help others in need and develop as a project manager. This led me to pursue a career in the non-profit sector and the Community Worker program provided the best opportunity to develop the necessary skills to do just that.

After graduation, I worked at the Multicultural Centre of Halton Region before joining HBC as their Community Investment Specialist in 2006. I coordinated and executed community investment and corporate fundraising events focused on two annual corporate golf tournaments, one being the largest golf tournament in Canada.

I have since applied my project management skills to positions in marketing and promotions. In late 2012, I joined Burlington-based Direct Access Marketing Inc. as Account Manager.

Much of our work involves direct response media such as direct mail, web and mobile marketing, methods which allow us to track results for our clients. Direct Access Marketing specializes in targeting the boomer and zoomer (senior) markets. We market a host of goods and services ranging from adjustable beds, to insurance, to funeral services in the United States and Canada.

Although it’s a cliché, I recommend that every student take time to make the most of each moment at Sheridan. The foundation you build during your time at Sheridan will carry through into the rest of your professional and/or academic life, no matter where your career takes you.

David Mader is a Director on Sheridan’s Faculty of Applied Health and Community Studies Alumni Board of Directors.
