Chris Watson was definitely on the ball while studying Marketing at Sheridan. He started interviewing for jobs at the beginning of his final semester and had an offer before he had finished his exams.

The role of Technical Telecommunications Recruiter at TEKsystems was one of the five jobs he was offered. The competitive salary with the possibility of unlimited commissions right off the bat, and the philosophy of promoting from within are what drew him to the IT staffing provider, and have helped keep him there.

Ranked number one in the industry by IT Services Business Report for the past decade, TEKsystems has its Canadian corporate headquarters in Mississauga, with more than 90 offices spread throughout the rest of the country as well as in the U.S. and Europe.

Born and raised in the GTA, Chris was always drawn to a career in business. “My two favourite part-time jobs involved sales roles that required me to qualify customers, understand the root of their needs and how I could help them. Sales is easy when you are giving people a service that they value and need to achieve their own goals.”

Of Sheridan’s Marketing program, he says, “I’d highly recommend it.” The faculty at Sheridan made an impact on him, particularly Doug Greenwood, Marketing Program Coordinator.

An excellent student, “Chris had a very entrepreneurial spirit and was surely destined for success,” says Doug. “He always displayed tremendous drive, energy and creativity.”

It is just this kind of determination and resourcefulness that will put some alumni above the crowd, asserts Chris. “I’m confident that most new grads of the program will be able to find work, but what will separate the grads is who gets the best jobs,” he says.

Chris shares his message with business classes at Sheridan on a regular basis. He advises new alumni to learn as much as they can about their industry and the businesses in it.

“It is important for the new grad to understand what the typical successful profile and a five-year road map look like. Grads should focus on the opportunity that a company offers and how they will be able to build long-term success off that foundation,” he says.
