Welcome to the new school year. A message for Sheridan alumni

This September, more than 23,000 full-time students began a new school year at Sheridan. Watching them hunch over laptops in the Learning Commons, or line up for a coffee reminds me of my own time here as a Marketing student. No matter where else my career has taken me, the connections I made with faculty, and the community I had with fellow students at Sheridan will always stand out as a highlight of my academic career. This year, I find myself reflecting on my experience even more as the college showcases its history through 50th anniversary celebrations. The students here now are walking in the footsteps of you, our 170,000 talented alumni.

As the manager of alumni programs at Sheridan, I feel privileged to engage with many of you on a regular basis and hear about your success. Whether you’re working in the community, business, or the arts, your accomplishments are evidence of the value of a Sheridan education. We take great pride in our alumni and value your contributions to Sheridan. You inspire and motivate our students; create co-op and employment opportunities for them; and, most importantly, you are our greatest ambassadors. You make a real difference in our communities.

I was recently reminded of this on the first day of school when Chilina Kennedy (Music Theatre Performance ’00) held an audience of music theatre students in awe during a surprise visit and performance. She talked about her journey from Sheridan to Broadway, and the experience of portraying iconic songstress Carole King in
Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. This inspirational visit welcomed members of the class of 2021 with a motivational and electrifying moment that will stay with them for years to come.

You too can inspire today’s students by visiting campus to talk to classes about your work. Share the ups – and downs – of your career and give students the real-world insight a Sheridan education is known for. There are also plenty of other ways to engage with us. Reach out and tell us about your work so we can share it through our alumni publications and social media platforms. We encourage you to stay connected with Sheridan by attending an event, reading our newsletter, and considering an investment in our current students. After all, Sheridan is your alma mater and this is your alumni association. Let’s work together to share your talents, experiences and knowledge to build on our legacy as we move into the next 50 years.
