TV Appearance Breathes Fire into Grads Career

April 10, 2012

Within two hours of appearing on CBC’s Dragons’ Den, Gabriella Mammone saw a 700% jump in traffic to her company’s website, The 1995 Human Resources grad is the Owner of Occasion Giftware, an online gift company that was featured on the March 14 episode of the hit reality TV series. The overwhelming response following the program has taken much of the sting out of not being offered financing by the Dragons.

Business has never been better, says Gabriella whose company recently won a 2012 Bride's Choice Award through online wedding planning site WeddingWire. Her second company, a human resources firm called Senso 3C which she opened last year with a partner, is also keeping Gabriella on her toes.

“My life has definitely taken a turn into the fast lane,” says the Mississauga native who launched following 15 years in the staffing industry.

Gabriella’s appearance on Dragons’ Den has had an unexpected result on the personal front, as well. She has rekindled relationships with old friends, including a classmate from her elementary school days in Thompson, Manitoba who recognized Gabriella after 20 years.

Overall, she feels fortunate to have made it on the show at all. More than 1500 people apply for 150 spots on the program. “It’s important to be grateful for opportunities, regardless of the outcome because they can open new doors for you.”

A new direction could be just what you need to jumpstart your career, Gabirella adds. “It’s important to recognize when to stop and make a change on your route to achieve your life goals.”

Once you are successful, don't forget about those who helped you get there, she continues. So despite her busy life, Gabriella makes time to give back to her community.

Currently, she is part of the planning committee for the Multiple Sclerosis Walk in two Mississauga locations in 2012. An enthusiastic Sheridan volunteer, Gabriella was Past Auction Chair of Sheridan’s Big Picture Gala. “Sheridan taught me the fundamentals of business. I thank my former teachers for their guidance and allowing me to take something home other than homework.”

In fact, Gabriella was volunteering for Sheridan’s Hazel McCallion Campus Official Opening event on the same day as her Dragons’ Den audition. “I guess you could say that Sheridan was my lucky charm!”
