Sheridan Talent Takes Broadway by Storm

March 08, 2012

Chilina Kennedy is wowing audiences and critics alike as Mary Magdalene in the Broadway production of Jesus Christ Superstar which opened in previews on March 1st. The 2000 Music Theatre-Performance grad is reprising her highly celebrated role in the 2011 Stratford Festival production of the rock opera.

Called the “new reigning star of Stratford’s musicals” by the Toronto Star’s Richard Ouzounian, Chilina gained huge attention in Stratford’s West Side Story for her portrayal of Maria in 2009. The same season, she played Philia in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. She followed that up with the title role in Evita (2010) and a star turn as Rose of Sharon in The Grapes of Wrath (2011).

Chilina is joined in the Broadway production of Jesus Christ Superstar by fellow alumni Aaron Walpole and Mark Cassius.

Aaron Walpole (2001) brings his Stratford Festival role of Annas, a priest who delivers Christ to Pontius Pilate, to the Broadway production. His Stratford credits include Sir Lionel in Camelot last year and appearances in Guys and Dolls and Anything Goes in 2010. A Canadian Idol finalist in 2005, Aaron also starred as Lonny in the 2010 Mirvish production of Rock of Ages in Toronto.

His role as Matthew in both the Stratford Festival and Broadway productions of Jesus Christ Superstar caps a 25-year career in the theatre for Mark Cassius. A native of Trinidad & Tobago, Mark moved to Canada as a teenager. About a year after graduating from Sheridan in 1985, he landed in the Toronto cast of the musical, CATS. Since then, Mark has racked up an impressive list of credits, including appearances in The Grapes of Wrath (Stratford), Ragtime and Shenandoah (Broadway); Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (Toronto, Canadian national tour) and Miss Saigon (Princess of Wales Theatre). Mark was also a member of the renowned a cappella group The Nylons from 1997 to 2005.
