Sheridan Celebrates Official Opening of Hazel McCallion Campus

January 13, 2012

Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion proudly cut the ribbon to mark the official opening of her namesake campus on November 30, 2011, calling the facility “a new jewel in the crown of Mississauga.” Over 250 Sheridan supporters attended the event, including alumni, students, and community and business leaders, many of whom contributed directly to help fund the new campus.

Among the Faculty of Business graduates on hand for the event were Kimberly and Chris Galante, who have generously pledged support to the new campus. A member of Sheridan’s Business Hall of Fame, Chris is President and CEO of Bass Paper & Packaging Ltd. Donor extraordinaire and long-time mentor of Sheridan business students, Randy Pilon, (Business '82), President and CEO, Virox Technologies Inc., was also on site to celebrate the opening.

Arts alumni were in full evidence throughout the evening as well, including five Music Theatre – Performance graduates who provided guests with high-energy entertainment during the evening.

Alumni and students from various visual arts programs whose work is featured throughout the campus were also in attendance. The most recent of their many projects, a stunning glass installation, was unveiled on November 30th, 2011. Entitled “Aurora Borealis”, the installation features approximately 2200 glass tubes cut to varying lengths and suspended from the ceiling in undulating curves.

Mayor McCallion was joined on stage by Jeff Zabudsky, Sheridan President and CEO; Gary Goodyear, Minister of State for Science and Technology; and Amrit Mangat, MPP for Mississauga-Brampton South; as well as Sheridan Student Union President Monique Pereira; The Honourable William G. Davis; and Rob Filkin, Chair of Sheridan Board of Governors.

Located in the city centre at 4180 Duke of York Boulevard, the Hazel McCallion Campus welcomed its first cohort of students in September 2011. The facility will eventually accommodate 1,760 students, including business students and newcomers enrolled in a range of language training and employment preparation programs. In June 2011, Sheridan received $60 million in funding from the Ontario Government to construct the second phase of the Hazel McCallion Campus.
