Safra Farouque honoured with Community Service Award

May 27, 2014

Congratulations to Safra Farouque (pictured second from right) on receiving a 5-year Community Service Award from the Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration last month. The 2011 Social Service Worker grad was nominated in part for her work with the Alliance for the Advancement of Pluralistic Societies (1NAAS).

Safra was part of a team that created a video showcasing community pluralism for an event sponsored by the Toronto Area Interfaith Council this past fall. She continues to support 1NAAS in connecting youth who are interested in giving back to the community while promoting diversity. Zul Kassamali, President of 1NAAS, nominated Safra for the Community Service Award for her contributions to these initiatives, in addition to her other volunteer efforts over the past five years.

A 2013 Ontario Premier’s Award nominee, Safra has worked to improve the lives of at-risk women and children in Peel Region through her counselling roles at Mississauga’s Interim Place and Catholic Family Services Dufferin-Peel. She has returned to Sheridan several times to speak to students and their families.

Safra was among more than 11,000 volunteers recognized at 55 Ontario Volunteer Service Award ceremonies across the province this spring.
