January 17, 2016

Taking a break from Broadway, Sheridan’s music theatre grads Chilina Kennedy and Scott Campbell performed at the Kennedy Centre Honors in Washington last month for a star-studded audience that included U.S. President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.

The music theatre alumni performed as part of a tribute to legendary singer-songwriter Carole King. Chilina and Scott, who are starring in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical on Broadway, narrated the tribute and sang the classic, “So Far Away”.

Chilina Kennedy and Scott Campbell shared the stage with American music icons Aretha Franklin and James Taylor for a roaring version of Carole King’s “I Feel the Earth Move”.

The audience for the gala was filled with top names from the political and entertainment world, including film giants Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese. Other 2015 Kennedy Centre honourees were George Lucas, Cecily Tyson, Rita Moreno and Seiji Ozawa. The gala was broadcast on December 29.

This March, Chilina (2000) will mark her one-year anniversary playing Carole King in the smash Broadway musical. Scott (2007) has held the role of the singer-songwriter’s husband and musical partner, Gerry Goffin since September 2014.

A native of Oromocto, New Brunswick, Chilina made her Broadway debut as Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar, reprising her Stratford role. Kennedy has toured North America in Mamma Mia! and starred in several Stratford productions, including West Side Story and Evita.

Scott, who grew up in Waterloo, Ontario, made his Broadway debut as a swing in Jersey Boys. He also appeared in the national tour of American Idiot.
