Alan Campbell

Broadcast Journalism Grad up for Emmy Award

October 21, 2014

Best of luck to Alan Campbell whose television news show is nominated for a Lone Star Emmy Award. The 2010 Journalism - Broadcast grad is the morning anchor at KRGV-TV, ABC in Rio Grande Valley, Texas.  Alan's show, Channel 5 News This Morning, is nominated in the Newscast/Morning Daytime/Smaller Markets category. Winners of the Lone Star Emmys, which recognize television broadcast excellence in the state of Texas will be announced October 25.

“We were surprised by the nomination because the competition is so intense in television news, but we knew we had a compelling breaking news story,” said Alan, who is nominated for a segment about a bus carrying human traffickers that crashed near the Mexican border in November 2013.

Since moving to the southern United States shortly after graduation with his wife who is from Tennessee, Alan has worked in television news. He grew up in Barrie, spending his high school years as an elite hockey player. After an injury ended a potential hockey career, Alan spent six years as a sports director on a cruise ship before returning to Ontario to attend Sheridan. “Just when I was ready for a change, I met Jack Armstrong, the TSN basketball analyst who also worked with the Raptors. On the ship with his family, he advised me to become a sports caster,” explains Alan, who later set his sights on news casting.

I learned so much at Sheridan, it gave me a great base,” says Alan, who advises new grads against shying away from pursuing the career they desire, despite the odds. “I concentrated so much on my plan A that I didn’t even consider plan B. Just keep focused and things will happen for you.”
