Athletes Come Home

October 15, 2012

Alumni athletes looked back to their college years with gratitude and pride at the 2012 Athletic Homecoming on September 29. The highlight of the day was the induction of former athletes and staff into the Athletic Hall of Fame. Congratulations!

Steve Blundy (Community Planning, 1969)

Part of Sheridan’s first graduating class, Steve has made an indelible contribution to the double-blue varsity athletes over four decades. As a hockey player, he was an Athlete of the Year (1968); as Head Coach of the men’s hockey team, he accumulated more wins (128) than anyone else; and he served as Facility Manager at the Trafalgar Campus gymnasium for over 20 years.

Pat Blundy

A tireless Sheridan supporter of Sheridan athletes, Pat coordinated the recreation and fitness programs in Oakville for more than two decades and served as a varsity coordinator for both women’s volleyball and women’s hockey during her tenure.

Luciano (Luch) DeLuca (Business Administration – Corporate, 1988)

Sheridan’s all-time scoring leader in men’s soccer, Luch scored 31 goals for the double-blue in three seasons from 1985-87. They were OCAA runners-up — losing to the eventual national champions from Seneca. Now a real estate agent in Mississauga, Luch has fond memories of his college years. "There were some really fun times," he said. "We had a great coaching staff.”

The double-blue won the regular season conference title but were upset in the OCAA playoffs. However, as the host team, they still qualified for the national championship tournament. The team squeezed out a 4-3 double-overtime victory over Cape Breton in the semi-finals before losing the national title game to Red Deer.

1990-91 Men’s Soccer

After finishing the OCAA West regular season with a 6-2-2 record, the Bruins picked up their play once the post-season began, eventually taking the provincial title. In the national championship tournament they advanced to the final but fell to Capilano.
