Alumni Stars Shine Across Canada

October 10, 2013

Take a look behind the top music theatre productions making news across the country and you will find a wealth of Sheridan graduates. Music Theatre alumni have taken Canada by storm in 2013 with leading roles in productions at the Stratford and Shaw Festivals, the Charlottetown Festival, on Toronto’s top stages and right here on campus.

Four alumni are part of the highly lauded Mirvish production of Les Miserables which opened on September 27. That’s no surprise to John Lott (Theatre Arts – Technical Production, 1990) who is the Sound Designer for the musical. He has been designing sound for theatre for the past 25 years throughout North America, touring with Showboat, Sunset Boulevard, and Phantom of the Opera. “I started working before graduation and have since been part of many large scale productions. I knew we were in great shape with Les Miserables,” says John.

The Shaw Festival’s Guys and Dolls features nine graduates along with Sound Designer, John Lott, and the Stratford Festival - another traditional landing place for music theatre alumni - boasts 11 Sheridan graduates this season. The Charlottetown Festival features 11 alumni in two productions alone. Among those leading the way are Chilina Kennedy (2000) who stars in Evangeline, and Louie Rossetti (2007) and former Sheridan student, Katie Kerr, who both star in Anne of Green Gables.

Back on campus, alumni are bringing home some powerhouse performances to Theatre Sheridan this year. Marathon of Hope, a new musical about Canadian hero Terry Fox by alumnus John Connolly (2005) will debut on November 27. Music Theatre students and faculty gathered some inspiration by participating in Oakville’s Terry Fox Run on September 15.

Sharron Matthews (1989) will serve up her own brand of musical comedy in Full Dark on November 21 and on December 3 Michael Hughes will present Mickey and Judy which played to sold-out audiences across North America.
