Alumni Gain Birds Eye View of The Canadian Open

September 05, 2013

Sheridan alumni had an exclusive look inside the 2013 RBC Canadian Open at the Glen Abbey Golf Course in Oakville on July 24. From the Skybox Marquee VIP tent overlooking the 18th green, guests took in the RBC Wealth Management Championship Pro-Am which preceded the start of the 104th Canadian Open Championship. PGA pros on hand at the Pro-Am included Brandt Snedeker who went on to win the 2013 RBC Canadian Open, 2012 Masters Champion Bubba Watson, and tour veteran Vijay Singh.

The exclusive Sheridan alumni access to the RBC Wealth Management Championship Pro-Am was thanks to RBC Canadian Open Tournament Director and 1981 business graduate, Bill Paul.

Bill, who also holds the title of Managing Director, Professional Championships, Golf Canada, spoke of his passion for delivering this world-class event to Canadian golf fans. He remarked on how the Canadian Open has evolved over the years into an international affair featuring top PGA Tour players from around the world. This year marked the 19th Canadian Open Tournament Bill has coordinated.

Sports have long played a strong role in Bill’s life going back to his college days. As a varsity athlete at Sheridan, he was a driving force behind the Bruins’ Ontario College Football League championship win in his final year. Bill’s efforts netted him Sheridan’s Athlete of the Year Award in 1981.

Alumni joining Bill at the Glen Abbey event didn’t have to be award-winning athletes to get a taste of the winner’s circle. Many took the opportunity to have their photo taken with the RBC Canadian Open Trophy as part of the day’s festivities.
