650 Flock to Toronto Animation Industry Night

December 05, 2011

The Toronto animation community turned out by the hundreds to the Toronto Animation Arts Festival International (TAAFI) Industry Night last month. Young animators and seasoned veterans alike were among the steady stream of 650 guests who packed two floors of the Vogue Supper Club on November 10th to reconnect with colleagues from other shops and press the flesh with potential employers.

The event helped raise funds for the new festival which will be held on June 2nd and 23rd at the TIFF Bell Lightbox. TAFFI Co-founder, 2002 Animation grad Ben McEvoy, was thrilled with the turnout at the event which clearly struck a nerve with the 4,000-strong animation community in Toronto and the GTA.

“Although they have close ties to their college and previous work colleagues, many animators are unable to find the time or opportunity to stay connected. It's obvious that there is a tremendous interest in being able to bond with our industry peers and celebrate what we do.”

Special guests of the evening included Nelvana Co-founder Clive Smith, and Toronto radio personality “Humble Howard” Glassman who gave away some great prizes. Among the many Sheridan grads on hand was Devin Lim (Animation 2007) representing the Faculty of Animation, Arts and Design Alumni Board. The Sheridan Alumni Association was among the event’s sponsors.

The success of the evening bodes very well for the upcoming festival, says Ben, who is Head of Interactive at Optix Digital. “We are considering extending our plans to accommodate a much larger festival audience than we had originally anticipated. This could very well help build and support an artistic environment that our industry is asking for.”
