Health Coverage for International Students

International students are required to have mandatory medical insurance coverage while studying at Sheridan to ensure they have access to health care.

Full-Time Students
  • The cost of the health insurance policy is included in full-time tuition fees.
  • Health insurance coverage will be provided through Guard.Me and will commence on the first day of the month of the scheduled program date, provided that tuition fees have been paid.
  • Health insurance documents (in pdf format) will be emailed to students’ Sheridan email accounts per timeline below:
    • Fall Term Start- end of September
    • Winter Term Start- end of January
    • Spring/Summer Term Start - end of May

      NOTE: please make sure to check all folders in your email, including junk email.

  • If a student needs to visit the doctor for urgent care (before the timeline above), they are advised to contact the International Centre to request an expedited policy.
  • All policies expire on August 31. No exceptions will be made.
  • Health insurance fee will not be refunded once a policy has been issued.
Part-Time Students
  • International students who drop to part-time status will still be charged the full health insurance fee.
  • International students in the Faculty of Continuing Education and Professional Studies do not qualify for the health insurance plan. It is the responsibility of each student to ensure that they purchase adequate health insurance coverage while staying in Canada.
Coverage upon Arrival
  • Students arriving to Canada earlier than the scheduled start date are responsible for arranging their own medical coverage.

Mobile Doctor by Guard.Me

    Guard.Me offers international students direct access to a doctor, anytime and anywhere across Canada. International students can now call mobile DOCTOR for on-the-spot medical advice – their health concern will be assessed and they will be given the right advice over the phone or a prescription written, if necessary. See steps below on how to access Mobile Doctor.

    1. Sign up at will need your policy number and date of birth).
    2. After you sign up, you can describe your symptoms and a doctor will review the information within minutes. You can connect via text, audio and video chat to have your consultation.
    3. The doctors can diagnose and prescribe medication as necessary and advise on the next steps.

    Mental Health Coverage by Guard.Me SAFE by is now available at Sheridan to support international students with mental health challenges as they adapt to study and life SAFE provides confidential and private service to students with 24/7 access to multilingual and multicultural experts, so that students may discuss their challenges and concerns with someone who speaks their language and understands their culture.

      Health Insurance for Dependants

        Health insurance is for international students only. It does not include spouses or children. If you would like to obtain health insurance coverage for your dependents, you must purchase the policies directly from Guard.Me on the following link:

        • NOTE: The option to add family members will not be available until you receive your health insurance card per timeline above. If you require dependent health coverage earlier than the timeline above, please contact the International Centre (proof of urgency may be requested).
        Exemptions (opting out)
          • International students can only be exempted from the Guard.Me health insurance policy if they are covered by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP), no other plans will be accepted.
          • If applicable, exemption requests must be received by the International Centre before the deadline to withdraw with partial refund.

          Health Insurance for Recent Graduates

          • It is recommended that students make arrangements for temporary health insurance for the time period after their Guard.Me health insurance expires and before they are eligible for a provincial health insurance plan.
          • As a recent graduate, you are eligible to apply for coverage. You must apply within 30 days of your policy expiry date. The minimum purchase of six (6) months is required, and the maximum you can purchase is one year.
          • If you miss the deadline, you will not be eligible for coverage. Before you apply, review the plan available to you, as it may not the same plan that you have had through your school.

          • Guard.Me provides emergency health insurance coverage (pre-existing conditions are not covered).

            How do I receive my health insurance policy?

            All health insurance policies (card in PDF format) are emailed to the student’s Sheridan email account from Guard.Me directly. If students are unable to locate their policy in their email, students may call Guard.Me at 1-877-873-8447 and provide their personal data to retrieve their policy information. For general inquiries, they can email

            How do I use my card?

            If you are receiving any treatment that is covered by your policy, you can go to any healthcare provider. Some providers will not require you to pay them and will charge directly. This is called “direct billing”. Some providers will require you to pay them directly and in this case, you must keep the receipts and then you need to submit a claim to to get reimbursed for the eligible charges.

            Can I see a doctor first and remit payment for the visit later?
            • For Direct Billing clinics: Upfront payment for seeing a physician will be required only if students fail to provide a valid health insurance card at the clinic.
            • For Non-Direct Billing clinics: Upfront payment for seeing a physician will be required.

            Can I receive medications first and remit payment later?

            Upfront payment for prescription medications will be required if students fail to provide a valid health insurance card at the pharmacy.

            At a hospital visit, must I present a health insurance policy?

            Yes. At a hospital visit, staff will ask for OHIP or insurance coverage. If student is unable to provide a health insurance policy at the time of admission, they may do so later once invoice is issued.

            What if I withdraw from Sheridan College?

            If you officially withdraw from the college or transfer to another institution after the last day deadline to withdraw from a Sheridan program with a partial refund, your health insurance coverage will not be cancelled, and fees will not be refunded. Your health insurance will remain valid until the expiry date indicated on the card.


            What if I lose my card?

            If you lose your card, you can obtain copies of your card by simply log on to and follow the instructions to re-print your card.
