Arlene Singh-Dattoo

Professor

Dr. Arlene Singh-Dattoo has been a teacher at the post-secondary level for over 20 years. Her qualifications include a B.A. (Honours) Degree in English and History, A Master of Philosophy Degree in English, and a Ph.D. in English. In addition, she is TOEFL and TESL Certified (Canada and International Certification). Since Arlene possesses Spanish as a second language, it is no surprise that she has an article published by the literary journal Contexto which has been translated into Spanish. Contexto is a yearly journal that publishes academic articles from Latin American and Caribbean scholars. She currently has other publications pending. Her main area of expertise is postcolonial literature specifically from Canada, West Africa, and the West Indies. However, she also teaches Academic English courses and literary courses such as Fantasy and Fairytales.  As a researcher she has extensively explored literary works that fall under the category of the “confessional mode “. Besides teaching experience, she possesses administrative and curriculum development experience having been the Administrator and Lead Instructor at a Private Career College for many years before coming to Sheridan College. She admits to dabbling in poetry writing which she uses to explore her more creative side.  In her spare time Arlene does volunteer work for a local primary school helping Grade One students to develop their reading skills through the All Star Reading Program. In the past 15 years she has also done volunteer teaching at the Central Parkway English Learning Centre that is run by the Dufferin-Peel Catholic School Board, as well as, the Peel Literacy Guild. These are all institutions that focus on Adult Education. This is in keeping with her personal teaching philosophy that no student should get left behind. Even more importantly, she views her volunteer endeavours as a way of having others benefit from her expertise in an educational setting.
