John Laugesen

Professor, Information Technology

Dr. John Laugesen successfully defended his thesis in August 2013 at the DeGroote School of Business, McMaster University. The topic of his thesis was “Adoption of Electronic Personal Health Records by Chronic Disease Patients: Integrating Protection Motivation Theory and Task-Technology Fit”. Following his oral defence, the examining committee recommended that John be nominated for the following awards:

       • Governor General’s Academic Medal – to be awarded to the student who achieves the highest academic   
         standing at the graduate level.
       • CAGS/UMI Distinguished Dissertation Award – to recognize Canadian doctoral dissertations that make
         unusually significant and original contributions to their academic field.

Prior to completing his PhD, John received his Honours Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration (HBA) as well as his Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Western Ontario, where he was named to the Dean’s Honour List.
During his tenure at McMaster, John published six papers for international conferences including the International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS), the Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS) and the European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS). His paper presented at the 2011 ICIS Special Interest Group – Human Computer Interaction (SIG-HCI) workshop received a Best Paper award. He was the recipient of two Ontario Graduate Scholarships and was also competitively selected to attend the 2011 ICIS Doctoral Consortium.

John has over 17 years work experience, mainly with IBM Canada Ltd. and KPMG Management Consulting, where he was a Manager working on technology marketing consulting engagements with large clients such as Nortel Networks and Bell Canada.

John has teaching experience at both the graduate and undergraduate levels at The University of Western Ontario, McMaster University, Sheridan College and Ryerson University, focusing on Introduction to Information Systems, Case Competitions, Management of Electronic Business, and Consulting Workshops.
