Emily Brown

Professor, Math

Emily Brown joined the Pilon School of Business as a full-time faculty member in January 2015 after several years working on Seneca College’s provincial Ministry funded research and development project, the College Student Achievement Project. Before this work was discontinued, Emily was responsible for developing and field testing a post-admission Math assessment for the Ontario college system. Currently, Emily teaches Math in both the Business diploma and BBA degree streams, where she uses her background in foundational Math to support student success.

Once at Sheridan College, Emily launched the Math Community of Practice to bring individuals together from across the College who are interested in supporting students in Math and to share their experiences and best practices. With a great interest in internationalization at Sheridan College, stemming from her own experience in teaching, learning and working abroad, Emily chaired the Faculty’s Internationalization Working Group for several years. In 2018, she was nominated for a Sheridan College student success award.

Emily holds a B.A (Linguistics), Dip. Chem. Engineering, B.Ed, (Curriculum, Teaching and Learning) and an M.Ed, (Mathematics for Teaching). Her professional experience includes working at Imperial Oil, in Canada, and Royal Dutch Shell, in the Netherlands, in their research departments. After completing her B.Ed including a semester completed in Hokkaido, Japan, Emily taught as a Math and Science specialist at the Calgary Science School (now Connect Charter), a public charter school in Calgary, Alberta.

In December 2018, Emily was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO). In addition to this Board, Emily sits on the Board of the Living Arts Centre, in Mississauga, and a variety of Math education focused committees including the Ontario College Math Association, the Ontario College Mathematics Council and the Ontario College Math Test Steering Committee.

Emily is the mother of two adult sons. She has a passion for travelling, and is a competitive trapshooter, participating in the sport for over four decades, and earning provincial, national and international titles. She volunteers on several sport shooting Boards, provincially and nationally, which promote sport shooting.
