Centre for Advanced Manufacturing and Design Technologies (CAMDT)

CAMDT is already well respected in the community, and among its external partners are such corporations as ABB, Omron, Siemens, Mitutoyo, and ZCorp. Over the past 5 years, the Centre has become a vehicle for collaboration between local SMEs and the college in the conduct of applied research, which involves students, faculty and staff. Industry collaboration is important to the college’s ability to sustain excellence in both education and research.

The Centre achieves these objectives through focus on two main activities:

•    Research: Identify, undertake, measure and validate important areas of cross-disciplinary and manufacturing-relevant applied research and development
•    Education: Transmit training and knowledge around sustainable, advanced manufacturing technology and practice

Manufacturing-related small and mid-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the Halton and Peel regions of Ontario have been particularly hard hit by the global recession, and the majority have shown limited ability to recover because of pressure in local and domestic markets from cheaper imports and foreign competition and an inability to reap the benefits of globalization. According to the Peel Data Centre, Peel Region saw a 34% decline in manufacturing employment between 2007 and 2013. The region has seen only a minor rebound in employment in 2011.

It will be extremely beneficial to small and mid-sized manufacturing enterprises to have resources available at Sheridan to help develop enhanced products and processes; create prototypes; research and adapt existing products with new knowledge and technology; simulate and model product performance; research market and product feasibility; and support business development.

CAMDT is completely consistent with Sheridan’s vision to build an innovation ecosystem to support community prosperity in Peel Region and to facilitate connections between the entrepreneurial imagination and practical resources for commercialization. This is a vision Sheridan shares with a number of innovation support centres in the region including HalTech, Colleges Ontario Network for Industry Innovation, Ontario Centres of Excellence and NRC IRAP.
