Professor, Investigations- Public & Private program

Graduating from the Law & Security Program at Sheridan in 1983, Andrea pursued a career in the private security sector. She attended the undergraduate psychology program at York University shortly thereafter and continued with a graduate program specializing in psychometrics. While working in the private sector she began her career with Sheridan in 1986 as a sessional instructor with the Law & Security Program and later joined Sheridan full time in 1990. Andrea has taught in many programs throughout her tenure including Private Investigations, Law & Security, Police Foundations, Child & Youth Worker, Sign Language Interpreter, Paralegal, General Arts & Science and the Correctional Worker Program. She has served as both program coordinator and student advisor during her tenure with Sheridan. In 2005, Andrea began to pursue a Masters degree in an interdisciplinary York University program between Osgood Law School, Faculty of Education and Critical Disability Studies. Andrea’s main area of interest is in Human Rights and disability law. Her research includes the law of accommodations for persons with disabilities, special education, the inclusion and accommodations of students with disabilities in the general education classroom, and barriers that prevent persons with disabilities from participating in employment. More recently she has become actively involved in the autism community where she has acted on several advisory boards for the Ministry of Education. Throughout her academic career Andrea has been the recipient of several awards including the NISOD award for teaching excellence and several York university awards for high academic achievement. She has had several publications and has presented her research at numerous conferences. In her spare time Andrea actively engages in advocacy work around issues such as homelessness, mental health and disability. Andrea also volunteers for various organizations including Autism Ontario, Community Living and Special Olympics.
