Maija Saari is the Associate Dean for the Department of Film, Television and Journalism in the Faculty of Animation, Art and Design. Maija is responsible for programs including the Honours Bachelor degree program in Film and Television, Media Fundamentals, Advanced Television and Film, Journalism, Journalism - New Media, Public Relations - Corporate Communications and Makeup for Media and Creative Arts.

Maija is a doctoral candidate in Higher Education with a specialization in professional education at OISE/UT.  The challenge of curriculum renewal and professional identity in the face of rapidly changing media technology drives much of Maija’s work in the field. She has over 20 years combined experience in journalism practice and education. After a start in science journalism, she completed an MA in Journalism at the University of Western Ontario and entered general reporting as a videographer and daily print reporter/photographer in daily news settings across south and mid-western Ontario. In 1999, she went back to Western for a Bachelor of Education and started teaching journalism. Through the course of teaching at both graduate and undergraduate levels in university and college settings, Maija ultimately specialized her educational practice upon the intersection between theory and practice in professional practice curriculum.

In 2004, Maija left Mohawk College as coordinator of the Advanced Diploma program in Journalism and Communications Media to build and lead a new Journalism degree program at Wilfrid Laurier University’s emerging Brantford Campus — enjoying a natural experiment for professional journalism education of being embedded within a truly interdisciplinary context during Brantford’s formative years. In 2012, Maija moved back to the college sector in a management role as Chair of the School of Media, Arts and Design at Centennial College. She was excited to join Sheridan as an Associate Dean in August 2014.
