Research interests

Brad’s research and writing  focus on issues related to sustainable design, creative exploration, critical analysis, independent research, design history, the language of style, on-line learning and design education.

Teaching interests

His courses explore the 'process' of design, emphasizing rigorous student involvement, scholarship and initiative. He teaches courses in the 3rd and 4th year of the BID Program, including Advanced Studio, Site Studies, Case Studies and Professional Practice.

He also teaches the first year Sustainable Practices course, which encourages students to explore the environmental impact of the Design and Construction industries.

Biography

Brad Culver has been a Professor in the Sheridan Interior Design Program since 2000. He was Academic Coordinator from 2000 to 2003. Prior to joining Sheridan, Brad taught in the Interior Design and Architectural Technology programs at other Toronto area colleges.

Brad completed a Master of Urban Design Studies (MUDS) degree from the University of Toronto in 2009, while on Sabbatical. He has Bachelor of Architecture (BArch) and Bachelor of Environmental Design Studies (BEDS) degrees from the Technical University of Nova Scotia (now Dalhousie University) in Halifax. He also has a BA (with distinction) from the University of Alberta, in Edmonton.

Prior to starting his own practices, Brad worked with architecture offices in Halifax, Toronto and London, England, including Sir Terence Conran’s firm in London. He is a partner in the Interior Design firm Culver and Henderson Building Design Inc. (since 1991) and is the principal of the Architecture firm Brad Culver, Architect (since 1999), both located in Toronto. His firms have designed and built over 300 projects, including new houses, renovations, offices, restaurants, small condominium buildings and landscapes. He is a member of the Ontario Association of Architects (OAA) and was for many years active as an Educator member of the Association of Registered Interior Designers of Ontario (ARIDO). His work has been featured in various magazine articles, exhibitions, books, and television shows. Brad was nominated as a TVO (TV Ontario) 'Best Lecturer' in the 2009-10 television competition of various university/college teachers.

Brad is also a music composer and performer, whose work has been featured on radio.

Over the years, Brad has hired many Sheridan students and Interior Design graduates to work in his office. There is typically at least one Sheridan Interior Design graduate working in Brad’s office at any time.
