Sheridan - Your First Day of Class

As a new student at Sheridan, it is important that you know what is expected of you. Therefore, we have provided you with a brief overview of what you should expect and how best to be prepared.

What to expect the first day of classes:

  • Check your timetable before leaving home - timetables can change up until the first week of classes, so checking the first morning will make sure you're going to the right class at the right time
  • Don't worry about getting lost! Student Services staff will be available in the hallways in bright yellow t-shirts to help get you to your classes
  • Parking is free the first week of classes, but you should think about getting your parking pass before classes to avoid lines
  • What to bring the first day of class:
    • A pen or pencil
    • A notebook or paper
    • Your class schedule
    • Textbooks (if you have already bought them)
    • Program specific supplies (art kits for art programs, calculators for math or finance classes, etc.)
  • The first day of class you will receive a copy of the course syllabus, which lists all of the assignments and readings that you are expected to accomplish in the semester. Make sure to keep your course syllabus as it will help guide you through your course work. Do not feel overwhelmed, as you have 14 weeks to accomplish everything.
  • If on your first day you still need to pick up your OSAP loan, make timetable changes or buy textbooks, be aware that there is a chance of long lines.
  • If in your first day you are lost or have questions, visit the Student Advisement Centre (Trafalgar Road Campus - Room B104, across the hall from Tim Horton's, Davis Campus - Portable C, Hazel McCallion Campus - Welcome Desk) for help - our staff is available to make your transition to Sheridan as smooth as possible.

What to expect as a Sheridan student:

  • Class sizes vary (usually between 20-45 people), but for the most part you will have all of your classes with the same people for the whole semester
  • You are responsible for your learning. Unlike highschool, your instructors may not remind you to submit assignments; they will just deduct marks if they are not handed in on time. There is a lot to do during the semester - set goals for yourself and plan your time accordingly from the beginning.
  • Many programs at Sheridan are mobile - laptops will be incorporated into the classroom environment. Social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace, and MSN Messenger are distractions that are easily accessible in mobile classrooms, and can be very detrimental to student success.
  • If there is something that you do not understand, speak to your instructor right away so that you are not frantically trying to catch up when there is a test or an assignment due.
  • You will have a significant amount of learning to do outside of class. Your instructors will use class time to review the most important material from a chapter, but you are expected to do independant review outside of class time. For every hour of class, it is recommended to spend three hours working on your own.
  • If you need help, ask! Speak to your instructor if you find yourself having trouble in a class. If you have any questions, feel free to visit the Student Advisement Centre (Trafalgar RoadĀ Campus - room B104, Davis Campus - Portable C, Hazel McCallion Campus - Welcome Desk).
  • There are consequences for poor grades including academic probation or dismissal. If you are concerned about your grades, please visit the Student Advisement Centre (Trafalgar Road Campus - room B104, Davis Campus - Portable C, Hazel McCallion Campus - Welcome Desk).
