Sheridan’s Academic Upgrading Program gives you the skills you need to enter a college program or improve your job prospects. It is recognized by all colleges in Ontario and is tailored to meet your specific educational needs. It’s a great way to pick up some courses you need to enter a Sheridan program or obtain your Grade 12 equivalency certificate. In addition to classroom study, the program is also available through Distance Education at the ACE level. Register through Continuing Education to take advantage of this option. The Academic Upgrading Program is:

Through Academic Upgrading, you'll improve your skills in:

- Employability skills academic/employment test preparation
When you complete the four senior-level courses in Communications, Core Math plus two other senior-level subjects, you'll receive an ACE certificate (Grade 12 equivalency).

Financial assistance may be available for transportation and daycare expenses for those with low family incomes. The Academic Upgrading Program is located at the Davis Campus in Brampton, Ontario and at the Skills Training Centre in Oakville, Ontario.

The Sheridan Enterprise Database Management one-year graduate certificate program offers a fast track to employment in one of the hottest fields in computing. In just eight months of study you'll gain highly marketable skills while receiving top-notch preparation for internationally accredited Oracle and IBM database management certification exams, including: - OCA: Oracle Certified Associate

Using the most current industry-standard software and hardware in enterprise database management, you'll learn to design, install, configure, manage, and customize enterprise database systems that support critical functions such as transaction processing and strategic decision making. The curriculum covers security, programming, data modeling and an introduction to Java. The entire second term is devoted to Oracle enterprise database management and administration.
Advancement Opportunities for Professionals
Enterprise Database Management students with a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher are eligible to apply for paid work placements, in which they can earn income and gain professional experience and contacts while advancing their education. To accomodate the needs of working professionals, Sheridan offers Enterprise Database Management courses evenings and Saturdays, combining in-class and online delivery. Onsite courses take place in a state-of-the-art computer lab; students are required to have the use of a computer outside of class hours for the online portion of the program. Mobile ClassroomThe Enterprise Database Management Program uses laptop computers for in-class work and home assignments. All course materials are Web-supported, with materials available to you 24/7 through your laptop and the Internet. Your learning opportunities will be greatly enhanced by having increased access to the Internet, learning resources and your classmates. Advanced Special Effects Makeup, Prosthetics and Props
Advanced Special Effects Makeup, Prosthetics and Props
Sheridan’s Advanced Special Effects Makeup, Prosthetics and Props Program prepares you in one year to begin a career in the highly specialized field of advanced special effects makeup. It is one of the few programs of its kind in North America and the only one in the Ontario college system. Coursework was developed specifically to meet the needs of employers such as museums, amusement parks, exhibitors and the entertainment industry.
Through intensive lab experiences that simulate industry settings, you'll gain solid knowledge in casting, molding, sculpting and developing prosthetics, props and animatronics. You'll earn your graduate certificate through classes that involve:
- Researching styles, trends and new developments within the industry
- Developing two-dimensional special effects concepts and work-ups of what they might look like complete
- Using specialized products and equipment to animate, sculpt, create, cast and mold your creations
Classes include both classroom theory and extensive hands-on lab work. Guest industry speakers regularly visit class, providing excellent networking opportunities. Because classes are small, you'll receive lots of personal support from your professors who are themselves highly experienced in the field. Most are still active in special effects makeup. Through your study you'll also be introduced to the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), the union representing the profession. Field Placement ExperienceDuring the summer following the first two semesters, you'll participate in a field placement where you can use your newly acquired special effects makeup skills in a professional setting. This invaluable work experience and exposure to professionals in the field can be a springboard for employment. With the growth of environmental management and regulation, the demand for environmental professionals has never been higher. An Environmental Control graduate certificate from Sheridan offers quick entry into this rapidly expanding field for graduates from a traditional science, engineering or technology discipline. The Environmental Control Program builds on existing knowledge to develop the specialized expertise and skills needed by employers in the environmental sector. Practical Curriculum Designed by the Industry In Sheridan’s unique Environmental Control Program, you’ll acquire comprehensive knowledge of:
- Environmental laws and regulations
- Air pollution, energy and climate-change issues
- Environmental management systems, including ISO 14001
- Current methods for sampling, analysis and treatment of air, water, solid waste and hazardous waste streams
- Strategies for conducting environmental audits, performing site assessments, and designing occupational health and safety programs
All courses are taught by practicing environmental professionals, ensuring that program content is both practical and current. An advisory committee of industry and government experts developed the Environmental Control Program and continues to assist Sheridan in curriculum design. Environmental Control students with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher are eligible to apply for a four-month, paid co-op placement providing valuable work experience. Sheridan Advanced Television and Film Studies Program (ATVF) provides a benchmark of excellence for film schools in Canada. ATVF integrates the practical, technical and creative aspects of television and film studies while providing direct, industry-relevant experience. ATVF stands out among Canadian film schools for its hands-on emphasis. The program belongs to CILECT (Centre International de Liaison des Ecoles de Cinéma et de Télévision), an international consortium of the world’s major television and film schools.
Sheridan Advanced Television and Film Studies (ATVF) courses are held at the Trafalgar Road Campus in Oakville, Ontario. ATVF film work has been produced in studio and Toronto locations. Numerous productions have been filmed in international locations in China, India, Europe and South America.

Earn the certificates you need as a financial planner
When you’ve completed the Financial Planning Program, you'll have the opportunity to earn certificates offered by the Canadian Securities Institute for:
- Canadian Securities Course® (CSC®)
- Conduct and Practices Handbook Course® (CPH®)
In addition, you'll have the opportunity to complete the (L.L.Q.P.) Canadian Insurance Course (CIC), a prerequisite for the Insurance Life-License exam, and you'll begin to acquire knowledge and skills that will assist you in completing your Canadian Financial Planning (CFP) certification.

Animal Care
Sheridan’s Animal Care Program prepares you to work as part of a professional team in such locations as veterinary clinics, shelters, grooming businesses, wildlife rehabilitation facilities, dog daycare facilities, pet shops, zoos and other such animal facilities. In the program you'll study such subjects as animal anatomy, nutrition, domestic animal science, exotic animal science, animal grooming, animal nursing procedures and animal handling. The Animal Care Program is ideal for you if you have a technical interest in animals, are patient, conscientious, attentive to detail, highly motivated and dedicated. The Sheridan Animal Centre, where many lab activities will take place, is accredited by the Canadian Council on Animal Care with a Good Animal Practice Certification (GAP). You can expect to work with live animals under supervision to demonstrate and practice skills such as: - Handling and restraint techniques

- Veterinary simulation exercises
Get Real-World Experience Through Your PracticumA popular segment of the Animal Care Program is the two-week placement in an animal facility at the end of your second semester. This practicum gives you valuable frontline experience working with animals and observing their care. You may qualify for one of a number of academic awards granted each year on the basis of academic excellence. Donors include Dr. G.R. Cormack and Best Boarding. Additional Costs/WorkloadYou should expect to spend approximately $400-$600 on laboratory supplies, textbooks, lab coat and surgical scrubs while in the Animal Care Program. You also should be prepared to spend 15-20 hours each week on assignments outside of your regularly scheduled classes.
