Graduation Year: 2011
Although she graduated from Sheridan close to two years ago, Neelam Jethmalani’s education is far from over. Working as a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) both in hospital and home care settings provides her with a wealth of opportunities to fine tune and add to her skills.
In addition to her part-time RPN position at Mississauga’s Credit Valley Hospital, Neelam has run flu clinics and other health clinics with VON and run health fairs with LifeMark Health Occupational Services. She also works as a visiting nurse for Red Cross Care Partners.
The combination gives her the experience of administering in-home care - including wound management, IVs, insulin injections - as well as more complex care to patients in hospital.
“Getting a Practical Nursing designation has opened up a lot of doors for me and I am enjoying my job enormously,” says Neelam who lives in Mississauga with her husband and daughter, a McMaster University student. “I am gratified when I make patients and families happy by fulfilling their needs.”
Neelam had little health care experience when she came to Sheridan, having worked as an administrative assistant for 20 years. After being laid off due to restructuring, she was looking for a professional change.
“I wanted a career that was recession-proof as well as rewarding. Working as a nurse meets both of these goals,” says Neelam who received a bursary to assist in her studies.
She found Sheridan to be a very supportive environment in which to retrain.
“All my instructors were wonderful, very motivating mentors, especially Sandra Secord,” says Neelam, who advises students to stay positive and ask for assistance when they need it. Although Sheridan faculty encourages self-directed learning to prepare students for the work world, teachers are always open to helping reduce roadblocks to student success, says Sandra, especially for a student like Neelam whom Sandra called “a tremendously caring and hard-working person.”
Like most graduates, Neelam has discovered that nursing, like most professions, is characterized by lifelong learning. “Every day I learn something new. I feel as if I am on the right path.”
