Immunization

This section contains information regarding:

First Year Students

The following programs require completion of Immunization and Tuberculosis skin testing prior to course clinical placement:
  • Early Childhood Education
  • Educational Assistant
  • Personal Support Worker (PSW)
  • Pharmacy Technician (PT) (Davis)
  • Practical Nursing (PN) (Davis)

Both part-time and full-time students registered for the above programs are required to complete and submit a current Immunization Form to the Health Centre.

For full-time students, immunization clinics may be arranged through the Health Centre at your campus. Times and dates will be scheduled with your Field Coordinator and Health Centre staff. All clinics will be held in Health Services. The clinics have been arranged for your convenience and your attendance is encouraged.

Continuing Education students can be seen by an R.N. during Health Services hours of operation.

You will be required to bring the following to the scheduled immunization clinic:

Immunization Record Form
with the front and back completely filled out. You can pick up a form from the Health Services waiting room or download a copy:

  • All previous immunization records (*yellow card). If you do not have this information, it is available from the Department of Public Health where you attended high school. Public Health Departments contact information. With your permission these departments will fax or mail the information to you directly.
  • Please have $10 with you for your first TB test. There is a $10 charge for each TB skin test. You will require a 2-step TB skin test once in your life which requires 2 TB tests, one to 3 weeks apart. It is mandatory to return 48 -72 hours after your test to have the TB skin test read by the Registered Nurse. Failure to do so will cancel the test.  This will result in a repeat test being done at the student's expense.
  • OHIP or Student Guard Card - ensure that your card is valid.

You may wish to go to your own family doctor to complete required vaccinations, blood and TB skin testing. Ask your physician if there are any additional costs for TB testing. The Immunization form may only be completed by the Health Centre nurse. Your family doctor may provide you with proof of immunizations/blood titere/TB Tests by giving you a note that includes all information on letterhead with a signature.

If you choose not to attend the Health Services scheduled clinic, you will be responsible for completing the immunization process outside the College, on your own time. It can take up to 6-8 weeks to complete the process as blood test results can take 3-4 weeks.

If the Immunization requirements are incomplete, a Certificate of Clearance cannot be issued. You will not be allowed to go on your placement without clearance. Once all of your requirements are completed, a Clearance Slip will be issued to you to give your course Field Coordinator. Make copies of your Certificate of Clearance & Immunization Record Forms as there is a $20 charge to reproduce these forms. For more information please contact Health Services.

Animal Care/Veterinarian Tech Students (Required)

Your placement in a possible High Risk area for Rabies requires that you be protected. Rabies is a serious and possibly fatal disease; therefore, it is REQUIRED that you have Rabies Vaccination protection. Please wait until you get in class to qualify for discounts on the vaccine. The Rabies Vaccine is mandatory for all Veterinarian Tech and Animal Care students. Do not have the vaccine if you are allergic to bovine serum, polymyxin or neomycin, have a viral infection, or are pregnant.

You will be required to have three injections/vials of the vaccine over a three week period. Some drug plans cover the cost. 4 to 6 weeks after the last injection of the vaccine, you will be required to have a blood test (titre) – to ensure that the vaccine has provided you with the protection from Rabies. The Davis Campus Health Centre can assist you with obtaining the blood test . Please make sure to wait 4-6 weeks after the last injection and then come to the Davis Health Centre with your valid health card to have your blood drawn. Results can take 4-6 weeks.
