MUMPS

Sheridan Students, Staff and Faculty

We have been contacted by Halton Public Health Department regarding a confirmed case of the Mumps at our Trafalgar campus. This communication is to make you aware of the fact that you may have been exposed to Mumps since November 8, 2011. Immunization is your best protection against mumps.  If you have been immunized with only one measles, mumps,
rubella vaccine then it is recommended that you receive a second immunization.

If you are unsure of your immunization status and you went to high school in Canada, you can contact your
local health department.

Halton Public Health 905-825-6060 ext 7841
Peel Public Health 905-791-7800 ext 6421

If you were born prior to 1970 you should have natural immunity.  Since this is not guaranteed you may want to
consider receiving a single dose of MMR.

Mumps is a viral infection.  Signs and symptoms usually develop 2-3 weeks after exposure and may include swollen,
painful glands on one or both sides of your face, pain with chewing or swallowing, fever, weakness and fatigue.
If you develop these symptoms please arrange to be assessed for mumps by a physician.  Contact your doctor's office
or your Sheridan Health Centre prior to going and inform them of your possible exposure to mumps.
If attending your family doctors office or walk in clinic, please take with you a copy of the letter attached from
Halton Health Department.

If you have any further questions please consult our website or call the health centre to speak to a nurse.

Please read the attached notice from Public Health, as it provides detailed information important to everyone at Sheridan.
