On Campus Volunteer Opportunities

 

The Sheridan Student Union  Ambassador Program
This is a new program that the Student Union is initiating at Sheridan, and enthusiastic volunteers will be key to its success this year. Students with a keen interest in leadership opportunities would be a great addition to the
group!

What is a Student Union Ambassador (SUA)?
SUAs are student volunteers designated to:
Be unofficial representatives of their classmates in their program of
study;
Stay up-to-date on SU services, events, activities, etc.;
Communicate relevant information between their classmates and the SU

Responsibilities of a SUA
Maintain communication between their classmates and the SU
Attend once-per-month SUA meetings
Stay up-to-date on SU events, awareness campaigns, available services,
etc. and share this information among their classmates
Ensure that their classmates are completely informed of what’s
happening within SU
Act as a primary contact for their classmates’ SU-related comments and
concerns
Ensure that their classmates are properly represented in their feedback
to SU

The first SUA Meeting will be held Wednesday, October 5th on the
second floor of the Student Union Building at 6 PM. Dinner will be
provided.

Sheridan ETAG (Elder Technology Assistance Group) - Trafalgar Campus - Fall 2011

Elder Technology Assistance Group (ETAG) is looking for volunteers interested in taking part in our Volunteer Technology Assistance Program. This initiative provides older adults with accessible assistance using modern technologies such as computers and the Internet. We also explore things like cell phones, MP3 players, digital cameras, and much more :)

We're looking for student volunteers interested in being technology coaches for older adults. Each volunteer position entails a 1.5 hour per week commitment for a minimum of 10 weeks. Technology assistance sessions happen at the Sheridan Elder Research Centre, located at Sheridan College's Oakville campus. In addition we are at the Centre for Education and Training in:

· Oakville (Speers and Kerr)

· Brampton (Hurontario and Ray Lawson)

· Brampton (Queen and Rutherford)

· Mississauga (Hurontario and Burnhamthorpe)

If this opportunity appeals to you, I would like to invite you to attend one, two-hour orientation session. The times are as follows:

1. Friday September 9, 2011 (1-3pm & 3-5pm) Location = Room K103 at Sheridan's Trafalgar Rd. (Oakville) campus.

2. Monday September 12, 2011 (2-4pm) Location = Room K103 at Sheridan's Trafalgar Rd. (Oakville) campus.

3. Tuesday September 13, 2011 (1-3pm) Location = 263 Queen St. E. Brampton Unit 14.

4. Wednesday September 14, 2011 (1-3pm & 4-6pm) Location = Room K103 at Sheridan's Trafalgar Rd. (Oakville) campus.

Habitat for Humanity Halton

Student volunteers can gain experience and add marketing collateral to their portfolios attached to the well-known brand Habitat for Humanity.

There are 4 volunteer positions available for the Marketing and Communications Committee:

 

Graphic Artist

Time Commitment: 3 to 5 hours per month – based on necessity

Responsibilities: This is a titled position on the Habitat for Humanity Halton – Marketing and Communications Committee. Your responsibilities are related to the development of Marketing or Advertising materials, Annual Report and Newsletter designs, and signage for the Habitat for Humanity Halton ReStore.

Required Skills: Along with proven competency with professional graphic design and editing software, you must be capable of following Habitat for Humanity’s branding guidelines. Also, the Marketing and Communications Committee frequently operates on tight deadlines so a great deal of versatility and creativity is required. Knowledge of Adobe Suite software (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, etc.) and Microsoft Office.

Writer/Editor

Time Commitment: 3 to 5 hours per month – based on necessity

Responsibilities: Habitat for Humanity Halton seeks experienced writers and editors for a titled position on the Marketing and Communications Committee. You should be interested in contributing to the organization through local media. This is an opportunity to get published in local papers, newsletters, develop content for our new website and to assist with Marketing and Communications writing.

Required Skills: Experience in writing, editing and publishing Marketing and Communications materials are a definite asset. Communications and Public Relations an asset.

New Media – Web Marketing

Time Commitment: 3 to 5 hours per month – based on necessity

Responsibilities: This is a titled position on the Habitat for Humanity Halton – Marketing and Communications Committee. To complement our website and social media (FaceBook, YouTube, Twitter and Kijiji), Habitat for Humanity Halton seeks a new media expert, familiar with all these communication systems.

Required Skills: The New Media – Web Marketing expert should be well-versed in social media. Basic HTML and web editing experience is an asset.

Event Planner

Time Commitment: 3 to 5 hours per month – based on necessity

Responsibilities: The Habitat for Humanity Halton - Marketing and Communications Committee is looking for an organized, talented Event Planner.

Required Skills: The ability to provide advice and assistance in coordinating technical and logistical requirements at an event to include, but not limited to:

• Site selection / setup
• Food and beverage service
• A/V promotional and exhibit materials
• Gifts
• Invitations and RSVPs
• Negotiate contracts, develop/manage budgets and handle event billing, payment of invoices, and financial closure
• Manage the day-to-day activities with the event organizers, the facilities and the suppliers;
• Develop and maintain a detailed work plan with tasks and milestones
• Coordinate the development of presentations, reports, briefing notes, business plans that deliver advice to senior government officials on key program matters and emerging issues

 

 

Volunteer Needed In Milton
A visually impaired Sheridan alum has an immediate requirement for volunteers to assist with work in the Milton Community Lotto Centre.

Duties include:
Assisting in the daily operations of a Community Service Centre
Running a lottery kiosk
Providing information on transportation
Working on planning seminars, workshops
Working with the elderly and immigrant populations

Location: Milton Community Lotto Centre, inside Zellers at 55 Ontario Street South
Times: Any hours you can donate to volunteer
