Q: What is Second Career funding?

A: Second Career is a program offered by the Ontario government to help laid off workers with skills training to help them find jobs in high-demand occupations in Ontario and provide financial support.

Second Career is a cost-sharing grant provided on the basis of need; therefore, applicants may be required to contribute to their training or education.

Second Career covers such things as: tuition, books, transportation and basic living allowance. Additional support may be available to accommodate the needs of people with disabilities, dependent care, costs of living away from home and academic upgrading.

Q: How do I know if I am eligible for Second Career funding?

A: If you were laid off as far back as January 2005, you may be eligible for Second Career funding. You must first visit your local Employment Ontario Assessment Centre. You will work with an Employment Ontario Case Worker who will assess your eligibility before applying for funding. Q: I am not sure which program I want to take.

A: Your caseworker at the VPI or Skills training office will assist you with your career plan. General program information is available on our website at www.sheridaninstitute.ca select the “Programs and Courses” tab.

Q: Should I attend a Sheridan College Second Career information session?

Q: We are required to provide information about different schools for our research, how do I obtain this information?

A: Program profiles are available on our website at www.sheridaninstitute.ca – Programs and Courses – Second Career – Information to help with Research.

Q:  I require an acceptance letter.

A:  Acceptance letters are prepared for those who accept offers.  To receive an offer, you must apply to a program through Ontario Colleges and meet all program requirements through either transcripts or testing.  If you require further informatin regarding offers, program requirements, testing, or acceptance letters, please contact Allison Tudhope in the admissions department at ext. 2929.

Q: What are the start dates for Sheridan programs?

A: Program start dates vary, be sure to visit our website for detailed information. Intakes occur September, January and May.

Q: How do I apply for a program at Sheridan?

A: Apply to Sheridan on-line at www.ontariocolleges.ca. Note: a non-refundable processing fee applies which is payable to Ontario Colleges. Your application will take 24-48 hours to reach Sheridan’s admission department.

Q: What are the admission requirements?

A: All programs require a grade 12 English. Some may also require a Math and/or Chemistry and/or Biology. Please consult the program requirements for your program on our website.

English Language Requirement

All instruction within Sheridan is in English. In order to be successful in a program, your communication, listening, comprehension, reading and writing skills must be at a level sufficient to meet the demands of postsecondary or Graduate Certificate study.

Computer Literacy

Computer literacy is required of all Sheridan students to enhance their opportunity to be successful in their program of study and upon graduation. The level of computer literacy varies by program.

What do I need to do about my transcripts?

· If you attended a high school in Ontario – you need to arrange with your last high school to have one (1) official transcript sent to ontariocollges.ca. Depending on where you went to high school, you may be able to request your transcript electronically through the transcript request service at www.ontariocolleges.ca. If not, contact your last high school directly.

· If you have attended an Ontario college or university – order your official transcripts through the transcript request service at www.ontariocolleges.ca

· If you have attended a high school, college or university outside of Canada – Depending upon the program to which you apply, an international document evaluation may be required. Further details will be available once your application is received at ontariocolleges.ca.

If you applying to a program taught in English, and if English is not your first language, proof of English proficiency is required.
Also required, is a photocopy of your Record of Landing or other immigration documents that show proof of your residency status.

· If you have your evaluated credentials report - Send your evaluation to the admission department at Sheridan College – Trafalgar Campus, Room D200 attention: Deborah Campbell. Be sure to identify documents with your full name and student number.

Q: May I apply as a Mature Student?

A: Mature students who apply to Sheridan’s certificate and diploma programs must demonstrate their ability to work at the postsecondary level in one of two ways:

· By successfully completing equivalency testing in English and/or mathematics and/or science

OR

· By completing a program of academic upgrading at a level appropriate to the program of choice. Mature students must demonstrate proficiency in meeting specific program prerequisites.

Q: I was sent an Access Sheridan username and password and I don’t know how to access it.

A: If you forget you username and/or password or are having problems with your account, please call 905-459-7533 or 905-845-9430 and choose option 4.

Q: How do I know if I have been accepted into a program?

A: You may view and confirm your offer of admission online by visiting www.ontariocolleges.ca/confirm. In order to secure your place in the program, you must confirm by the deadline date noted at ontariocolleges.ca. Once you confirm your offer, a detailed acceptance letter will be prepared.
