The year is 1846. Former barber Benjamin Barker (under the alias Sweeney Todd) returns to London fifteen years after having been transported to a prison camp in Australia on false charges. When he learns from Mrs. Lovett, the landlady of his former shop, who currently runs a meat pie shop on the premises, that his wife poisoned herself after being raped by the judge who wrongly convicted him, he vows revenge. Todd sets up shop again, determined to slit the throats of all who sit in his barber chair. Mrs. Lovett capitalizes on his decision by using the flesh of his victims to stuff her meat pies. This unlikely musical has become a cult favourite and is often considered Stephen Sondheim’s masterwork.
